    Great interview I've only recently discovered. Shelley is my first cousin/family Titanic expert, and I'm another of Leah's great-grandchildren here in the US. While younger, and having never had the opportunity to meet Sam or Leah, I can recall MANY days spent at the apartment of Uncle Phil (as I remember him) in his later years. Even named my younger daughter Leah, in honor of what I learned about strength and personality of "Mama Aks" (as I've always referenced her) .

      @@SezFrancis1 Appreciate the kind words! Only wish I knew a fraction of what Shelley does about the family's little "claim to infamy", but.....alas.....my knowledge is rather limited by the historical narrative/picking up snippets along the way. Heck, I learned more just watching this interview than I ever actually knew beforehand (especially about the broader background of the Aks family, beyond Sam & Leah). The irony is that I spent 2 years stationed in the UK (back in the late 90s), and always meant to get together with "the cousins from London". Sadly, it never panned out, but.....understanding more about the family dynamic now.....maybe on my next visit to that side of the pond.

      Oh, and just to clear up the family connection......Sara Aks (second child of Sam and Leah) was my grandmother as well. She had two children in Norfolk, Virginia.....Roberta (Shelley's mother) and Michael (my father). I grew up in Baltimore, but spent MUCH time with the Norfolk family over the years (Shelley and her sister Lisa were basically my older siblings, and remain so).

    Another thing I find strange is, why the clerk in London say to Mr. Caldwell that it was full? It was the calmer periods, Titanic was not even booked half full.... did that many Second Class passengers cancel their cabin reservations?

  • @Firemarioflower
    @Firemarioflower 8 місяців тому

    It's kinda confusing how the Caldwells ended up on the Third Class staircase for Sylvia to then be hoisted up with a rope ladder. Why didn't they just go by the regular Second Class staircase, since that was right through the door of B-Deck 2nd class promenade, as that's where they were waiting at this enclosed space?

    There's one thing I've been missing from this interview though..... there seems to have been a passenger that looked after Leah: Selena Cook. It was likely that she was in the same lifeboat, which was number 14. She looked after Leah on the Carpathia when she was in a state of mental breakdown, totally panicking and searching for her child Filly everwhere.

    Dr. Shelley Binder really is a phenomenal woman to listen to. You can tell she's a professor. She knows what she's talking about and in everything she explains, she makes perfect sense in terms of logical thinking and detail. They said if I had another seizure I should go back and have tests and I think it was 6 months in between first fit and diagnosis . 25 years later I think I have autism. Which is how I found you. And guess what my seizures have stopped years ago and I'm going to see if I can reduce the meds so you might not be on them all your life. I thought the absence seizures was a thing but I think its attention deficit disorder.

    I haven't been on a airplane in over 25 years. The last time was a flight from Tokyo to San Francisco. Air travel was terrible then, and everything I hear, it has gotten much worse since then. I decided a long time ago that I will never again get on another airplane if I can possibly help it. If I had been in your situation making that trip, honestly I would have avoided the airline, and taken a train from London to Glasgow, and a bus and ferry from Glasgow to Belfast. Yeah it would have taken an entire day, but at least it would have been a nice trip and you could have seen a lot of things. The good thing about the UK is that you have such nice trains there. Airplanes are bad, airports are bad, airline workers are bad. Air travel is just terrible, especially if you are autistic.
